As the house is of Georgian design we didn't want to extend to the side and create an unsymmetrical vista as the symmetry of the house is what initially attracted us. We found we only used about 40 per cent of the downstairs space with the kitchen being located in the darkest corner of the house and opposite the garden. The house is situated in the corner of the site and the traditional interior layout really didn't work for our growing family. We bought our home over 10 years ago, seeing the potential for further improvement, but decided to wait and see how we used it first. He has transformed the way we live and use our home so that every inch is functional yet beautiful. Will Gamble Architects has achieved something we never thought possible. Will Gamble, director, Will Gamble Architects The design challenge to make the contemporary and traditional elements of the new parts work in harmony with one another while complementing the existing property.Īs well as extending the house, we reconfigured the existing building throughout to create symmetry across the floor plan and improve its legibility – this approach is more in keeping with Georgian design principles. The contemporary addition was constructed out of oak and glass to contrast with the heavy masonry walls of the mock Georgian house.Īt first floor, the addition was visible from the high street, which required a very different approach – its vernacular was designed to be more in keeping with the surrounding village and the host building itself. We proposed a contemporary addition along the ground floor that was lightweight in appearance to reduce its visual impact on the existing property. We have the resources, experience and expertise to take your product from idea to market or step in wherever you need us most. The challenge of this project was to create a two-storey addition that is sympathetic to the host building while minimising its visual impact on the conservation area as the building is very prominent along the high street.
